Baboons With Pig Hearts Bring Us Closer to Human-Pig Transplants

Researchers have successfully transplanted pig hearts into baboons, keeping four of the animals alive for more than 90 days.

Each of these Anubis baboons was the recipient of a new heart, courtesy of an international team of researchers. With the new hearts, the baboons were able to live normal and healthy lives for months, which wouldn’t be all that surprising — except that the hearts came from pigs.

According to a study published on Thursday in the journal Nature, the researchers managed to keep two of the baboons alive for 90 days before they euthanized the animals in accordance with the terms of the Lees verder
