Interview: Artist Paints Survivors Because “Everyone Deserves a Portrait”

portrait painting stephen martyn welch

Self-taught artist Stephen Martyn Welch specializes in portrait painting and extends his skills to include everyone. His series Everyone Deserves a Portrait, is a raw look at people who are often overlooked when it comes to fine art portraiture.

Raised by a single mother in a small town in New Zealand after his father passed at a young age, Welch spent his childhood living in his own fantasy world. Strangely enough, he even failed his art class, as he was too busy drawing what he preferred instead of what was assigned. Art played a constant role in his life, though, as he Lees verder

Students Turn a LEGO Model Into a Life-Size Futuristic Hover Bike

LEGO Technic threw out the instruction booklet when they transformed their BMW R 1200 GS Adventure model kit into something completely unique. And what does their ideal fantasy bike look like? In 603 pieces they constructed a sleek, futuristic Hover Ride concept that looks straight from the set of a sci-fi action film.

But the fun doesn’t stop there. BMW took the concept and made the LEGO model come to life. And that’s how we end up with a life-size replica. Students from BMW Junior Company in Munich were tasked with the project, which even required specially modified parts.

Experimental Cutlery That Challenges Traditional Ideas of Usability

Design by Maki Okamoto. All images via Steinbeisser.

Merging design and haute cuisine, Amsterdam-based company Steinbeisser collaborates with designers and artists to produce surreal cutlery that operate beyond traditional ideas of usability for their online store Jouw… (Dutch for “your”). The tableware doesn’t necessarily make the experience of eating easier, but rather encourages the user to reconsider their relationship to utensils and how they are used.

“Yet it is not only about beauty, we also believe in sustainability,” explain co-creators Jouw Wijnsma and Martin Kullik on Jouw…’s website. “That’s why all the pieces Lees verder

Designer Transforms Arabic Words into Illustrations of Their Literal Meanings

Arabic Illustrated Words Transform Language into Visual Meaning

Architect and graphic designer Mahmoud Tammam has translated his love of word manipulation into a delightful series celebrating language. Based in Alexandria, Egypt, the creative started the project as a “personal challenge.” He explains, “I manipulate Arabic words and transform them into their meaning, and I made a total of 40 illustrated words.” In addition, the pronunciation of these Arabic illustrated words is included on every picture to help you sound them out.

Using the Arabic characters, Tammam fashions their sloping curves and dots into the bodies of animals, pieces of fruit, and distant landscapes. His pictorial manipulations Lees verder

Artist Turns Old Silverware into Blooming Flower Bouquets

Using standard silverware, British artist Ann Carrington creatively crafts realistic floral arrangements that overflow with blossoming botanicals. Though made entirely of metal, each utensil bouquet appears to bloom before your eyes, breathing new life into otherwise unwanted and unimaginative household tools.

Through careful crafting and with ample patience, Carrington turns the aged flatware and other kitchen tools into beautiful bunches of flowers. In each unbelievable utensil bouquet, spoons’ bowls become budding bulbs and rosettes; the layered prongs of forks turn into delicate, thin petals; and knives and handles represent clusters of leaves. Modeled after real-life floral arrangements, each display is creatively presented in a pot or vase, Lees verder

A Stop Motion Examination of Endless Loading Screens

Director Rafael Vangelis transforms the unbearable task of watching an endlessly spinning wheel or loading bar into an entertaining and analogue study of self-produced loading mechanisms in his latest short film Analogue Loaders. Using stop motion techniques and traditional animation he turns clay, wood, 3D-printed objects, and even eggs into 3D loaders, dazzling the eye rather than enraging the mind.

Vangelis considers the short film an animated autobiography, as he spends a great chunk of his own life watching projects slowly load and computers crash. “The result,” says Vangelis, “is an homage to all the lost time we Lees verder
